The Little Brass Scale That Never Lies: Fifty Years Behind a Chinese Herbal Counter
In a lane on the south side of Hangzhou, before daylight has climbed the wall, the first thing to wake is the smell — bitter with a sweet afternote, camphor wood, old paper, sun-dried leaves. Shen Baoquan was born in 1958 and took over his father's place as an apprentice in 1975, at seventeen. The first thing his master Mr. Lu taught him had nothing to do with identifying herbs: he put a dengzi, a small steelyard for medicine, into the boy's hand and told him to weigh out one qian of licorice. That took half a month. If the scale isn't level, the medicine isn't right; your hand shakes once and the taste in someone's pot shifts by a fraction. Fifty years on he still stands before the same wall of drawers — over a hundred of them, one herb per compartment, the brush-written names worn into shallow hollows by fingertips, in exactly the same place. The arrangement follows rules the trade calls the doupu: everyday herbs at the middle level, light materials up top, heavy minerals below, herbs that counteract each other never in the same drawer, herbs that look alike always separated. Filling a prescription begins with sheets of mulberry paper and ends with a hui deng — a second pass against the prescription — past a red line of eighteen incompatibilities that has to be second nature, and a wrapping folded into what the trade calls a tiger head, one packet per dose, with tags for decoct-first, add-late, decoct-wrapped, melt-in. In the 1980s queues formed at the window and a dose cost a few mao; in the 1990s hospital pharmacies drew the patients away; after 2000 chain drugstores took out the herbal drawers. The cabinet shrank and the pouch grew. A QR code for decoction and delivery now sits on the counter, machines seal the liquid into vacuum pouches, and in 2021 the state ended the pilot phase for formula granules. Then in the summer of 2023 a sour plum drink formula from a Hangzhou hospital went viral at a little over a yuan a dose, and the young came back carrying medicine pouches. Shen Baoquan says there is nothing romantic in the trade; a lifetime of skill comes down to four characters — not high, not low.
